Eskom running South Africa at high risk

South Africa's power system remains under pressure as Eskom continues with its planned maintenance programme, the power utility said on Monday.

Eskom urged the public to save 10 percent of their usual electricity usage, especially during peak times between 5pm and 9pm

On Monday the peak demand for electricity was forecast as 33,630MW and the available capacity to meet this was 35,078MW, including open cycle gas turbines,

How long can they gamble like this? Be prepared and put the power in your hands.

Generator Safety Tips

Here are some basics regarding portable generators. But the first thing to do is Read the Instruction Booklet or Manual that came with the generator. If the manual is lost or missing, contact the generator's manufacturer.

1) Never use a generator indoors or in an attached garage.
2) Don't connect your generator directly to your home's wiring.
3) Don't plug a portable generator into an electrical outlet in your home or garage.
4) Don't overload the generator.
5) Make sure your generator is properly grounded to avoid electrical shocks.
6) Do not store gasoline for the generator indoors.
7) Read and adhere to the manufacturer's directions for safe operation.

Many generator parts are hot enough to burn you during operation. Stay away from the muffler and other hot areas. For any further information contact All In One Generators.

BUSINESS COMMUNITY IS SHAKING

This is according to Michael Bagraim, President of South Africa's Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

"I am very worried and the business community is shaking, because the reality is that every time there is a power cut we lose an enormous amount of money. The business community now is suffering from all sorts of fall-outs from around the world and in terms of the economy we’ve had all sorts of price increases," he said.

Power outages will only harm businesses more. Be prepared

CABINET CALLS FOR “NATIONAL EFFORT” ON ELECTRICITY USE

“The Cabinet calls for a national effort this winter for further reductions in the use of electricity, as energy supply will once again come under seasonal pressure. Together, let us conserve energy by switching off non-essential appliances," said Minister in the Presidency Collins Chabane.

Chabane confirmed on Thursday that what he called "the precarious energy situation" was due to both essential maintenance as well as unintended technical issues, including cable theft.

ELECTRICITY SUPPLY IS BACK ON KNIFE-EDGE

Demand exceeding supply on most days over the last few weeks, forcing Eskom into taking extraordinary measures to supply factories and mines and to keep the lights on for consumers.

Eskom’s looming supply pinch follows the National Energy Regulator of South Africa’s (Nersa’s) refusal of its request for a 16% annual increase, instead granting it 8% per year until 2018, which has cast a shadow over the utility’s long-term funding plans.

But even if the supply problems are fixed, Eskom says unplanned outages are growing and it faces severely constrained supply going into winter this year and next.

ESKOM ANNOUNCES BLACKOUTS FOR WINTER 2013

Eskom is preparing to introduce blackouts this winter to prevent a complete system collapse.

The system will be under greater strain in the 2013 winter, because a massive maintenance backlog on Eskom's ageing power stations has forced the utility to continue repair work beyond the summer.

Remember 2008 and the cost to business? Be prepared.
