Demand exceeding supply on most days over the last
few weeks, forcing Eskom into taking extraordinary measures to supply factories
and mines and to keep the lights on for consumers.
Eskom’s looming supply pinch follows the National
Energy Regulator of South Africa’s (Nersa’s) refusal of its request for a 16%
annual increase, instead granting it 8% per year until 2018, which has cast a
shadow over the utility’s long-term funding plans.
But even if the supply problems are fixed, Eskom
says unplanned outages are growing and it faces severely constrained supply
going into winter this year and next.
